Cortez Masto, Laxalt vying for Senate control: Nevada and why it’s important

Nevada Preliminary Analysis

This election cycle, The Phillips Academy Poll is polling Nevada’s senate and governor’s races. Recently, the Silver State has sided with the Democrats by very slim margins, including in 2020, when the state’s six electoral votes went to Joe Biden. Both Nevada races will be competitive and the senatorial race could potentially upend the balance of power in Washington.

Incumbent Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is running for reelection and faces no serious challengers from within her party. Her Republican challenger in the general election will nearly certainly be Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, who has received the endorsement of many prominent out-of-state Republicans including Former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

With regards to the governor’s race, incumbent Democrat Steve Sisolak is seeking a second term and should easily secure his party’s nomination. On the GOP side, Sheriff Joe Lombardo leads the polls, though he faces competition from Former Senator Dean Heller and several other local politicians. As of late, no major endorsements have been made in the Republican primary.

There is hope among Republicans that disapproval of Biden will lead Nevadans to flip the state to red. Furthermore, candidates are vying for the support of Latino voters, who have the potential to be a deciding factor on November 8.
